{wellness wisdom} Beat the Summer Heat with Ayurveda

Ayurveda | Doshas | Seasonal Recipes | Wisdom Method Wellness

You’re hot, sticky, and sweaty. Your skin is a mess, you find yourself craving sweets, cold drinks, and ice cream. But nothing seems to cool your inner fire and you find yourself snapping at your honey pie, getting irritated with the woman with 25 items in the express check out lane {can’t she read?!?!}, and feeling hot and bothered {literally}.

It’s summertime. While that may mean vacations, lazy afternoons, and long days, it also means short tempers, overheating {physically and mentally}, and irritation –on all levels. That’s because Summer is the fiery season, dominated by the Pitta dosha. The Pitta dosha is a steamy combination of the fundamental elements fire and water, which means your irritation, skin rashes, fiery temper, and heartburn could be due to excess fire in your physiology or psychology.

What to do?

The wisdom of Ayurveda provides us with a template for balancing any excess of elements within the body; we use food, pranayama, and lifestyle choices to harmonize ourselves with our world. This includes eating seasonally, practicing season-specific yoga, meditation techniques, and seasonal detoxification. These elements combine in three unique combinations {called doshas} which govern our physiology, psychology, and the seasons of the year –among other things.

The three doshas are

1} Pitta –combining fire and water which governs Summer, digestion, and intellection

2} Kapha –combining earth and water, governs Winter and Spring, structure, and immunity

3} Vata –combining air and ether, governs Fall {and seasonal change}, movement, the nervous system, and elimination

Each of the doshas are present within us in a unique combination; it’s this combination of the doshas which determines our genetic type and plays a role in everything from personality, skin type, hair thickness, eye color, strength of digestion, and hunger and energy levels.

Bringing the doshas into balance is essential if we are to balance the subtle energy within the body and experience health and vitality on all levels. Yet our genetic predisposition to one dosha or another is a source of imbalance for us all, especially during seasonal change –or the season that aligns with our dominant dosha.

Below is an easy, healthy smoothie to balance the Pitta dosha: the one that brings us out of balance during Summer.
